The Future of

Biomedical Devices

An insight-building workshop hosted by the BioSciences Crossroads Initiative of the Mack Center for Technological Innovation and the Biomedical Research and Education Foundation (BREF).*

Invitations:  This event is by invitation.  If you are a professional in the biomedical device industry and would like an invitation to this event, please email:  mackcenter@wharton.upenn.edu.

Description & Agenda (updated 19.Sept.06)

The field of biomedical devices includes a wide variety of devices used in cardiology, orthopedics and neurology.  These devices hold great promise but there are also development and marketing risks, and critical issues involving product registration, replacement or failure of implants, patient privacy and HIPAA.

We invite you to join a group of thought leaders and experts in the field of biomedical devices to help define and discuss the impact of alternative scenarios for U.S. medical devices and how this robust sector may evolve in the coming 20 years.

In this unique insight-building event, we will apply a proven scenario building process to identify the key uncertainties that will affect future developments in monitoring, tracking and reporting product failures.  We will also explore the need and potential approaches for uniform registration and monitoring of medical devices.   Together, we will focus on developing scenarios and initial implications, leading to an exploration of opportunities and threats for the U.S. Medical Device market.

Participants:  Participants will include representatives from the biomedical industry, medical practitioners and researchers, government/regulatory agencies,
management research faculty from the Wharton School, and scenario consultants from Decision Strategies International.

Agenda

Location: Colloquium ROOM - 8th Floor - Huntsman Hall - 38th & Walnut St., Philadelphia  (note this is Colloquium ROOM, not Colloquium HALL)

9:15 - 9:45    Overview of the Medical Device Sector & Industry Segments
                      & Expert Interview Summary

This presentation includes an overview of the biomedical  device industry and includes a summary of recent expert interviews conducted as part of this research project

Paul J.H. Schoemaker -  Research Director, Mack Center for Technological Innovation and Chairman, Decision Strategies International

Jim Austin -  Director, Life Sciences, Decision Strategies International

  • Overview of U.S. Medical Devices market, focusing on Cardiovascular/Neuro-Spine/Ortho

  • Summary of current regulatory processes

    - Product registration and launch

    - Filing with the FDA for "adverse events"

    - Issues from different stakeholder perspectives
      (providers, government/regulatory, manufacturers)

9:45-12:00    Development of Medical Device Scenarios - P. Schoemaker

Professor Schoemaker will lead the group in a scenario building exercise to identify the key trends and uncertainties that will influence “alternate futures” for biomedical devices in the U.S.  The group will develop several scenarios to describe these future possibilities.

  • Break into working groups, divided by industry segments: Cardio/Neuro-Spine/Orthopedics.  A DSI consultant will facilitate each group.

  • Groups will start with BioScience scenarios, and tailor to their five-year perspective on a particular device segment

  • Once completed, they will be asked to list major decisions different stakeholders will be faced with, across future scenarios.

12:00-12:30   Lunch - East Hall - 8th Floor (get lunch & continue to meet)

12:30 - 1:30   Summary of Scenarios and Key Issues - P.Schoemaker

Prof. Schoemaker will lead the group in summarizing key issues and decisions different stakeholders will likely face given the scenarios developed.

  • Teams will report scenario findings

  • Discussion will focus on similarities/differences across scenarios

  • The group will seek to outline major issues facing different stakeholders across the scenarios

1:30 - 2:30    Strategic Implications for Medical Devices

Terry Fadem & Paul Schoemaker

The group will focus on a few key areas of strategic interest across segments -- including the critical issues involving safety, reliability, and notification of product failures/recalls/upgrades.  Also, how can industry best address the issues of patients, medical practitioners and hospitals, device manufacturers, and regulatory agencies?

  • Terry Fadem will introduce the current system and some possible future developments, such as a registry of all implantables

  • A second strategic issue will be examined as well

2:30 - 3:00     Summary and Next Steps –  Day, Fadem, Schoemaker

DSI will summarize the Workshop and research goals

DIRECTIONS:  From Philadelphia International Airport, the Wharton campus is a 30 minute taxi ride, and from 30th Street Station (train) it's about 10 minutes by taxi.  Have the driver go to the corner of Walnut and 38th Street -- Huntsman Hall is the large orange brick building on the corner.  The room location will be announced closer to the event.   IF DRIVING:  Park in the large enclosed structure at 38th and Walnut and walk across the street to Huntsman Hall.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS:  For this workshop, we recommend the SHERATON HOTEL  located at the corner of 36th and Chestnut (3 blocks from Huntsman Hall which is located at the corner of 38th and Walnut) – For reservations Phone 215-387-8000.  Please Note: The Inn at Penn is another alternative, and there are hotels in Center City, 15 min. by taxi.  Please reserve your hotel room soon, since this is a very busy week in Philadelphia and some hotels will be filled.  If you have questions about hotels or need advice, contact Geri at 215-898-2104 or email us at: mackcenter@wharton.upenn.edu .
