Mack Institute Emerging Scholars Workshop:
Evolutionary Perspectives on Strategic Management

Call for Applicants 2013

Sponsored by the Mack Institute for Innovation Management
The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

Note: The 2013 call has ended. If you are interested in applying to the 2014 call please check this page at the beginning of 2014.

Fundamental to the problem of strategic management is the pursuit of competitive advantage in dynamic environments. An evolutionary approach that embraces the challenge of firm adaptation to settings which themselves are subject to complex dynamics has proven to be a powerful lens on this basic problem of strategic management and has formed the basis of considerable work in the strategy literature over the last two decades. While this line of work has achieved considerable prominence in the literature, it is still not a well-codified, or broadly diffused element of doctoral training in strategic management.

As a result, the Mack Institute for Innovation Management at the Wharton School is pleased to announce the second annual Mack Institute Emerging Scholars Workshop. The workshop is intended for scholars ranging from students who are completing the second year of doctoral studies to those who have recently completed a doctorate. The program will be led by leading scholars in the field and attendance will be restricted to 20 participants. The program will consist primarily of seminar discussions lead by the participating faculty, but also include opportunities for more informal discussions with the faculty and among the participants.

The primary teaching faculty are as follows:

The program will be structured around the following topics: General foundations and motivations for an evolutionary perspective on strategy, Organizational adaptation, Industry evolution, Entrepreneurship, Technology strategy, and the role of the Institutional environment.

The goal is for the workshop to help a new generation of scholars push their own understanding and research forward and to help establish a community of young scholars with common interests.

A program fee of $750 is required. Accommodations will be arranged but are the financial responsibility of the participants as is their travel cost. Interested applicants should submit the following materials to mackcenter@wharton.upenn.edu with EMERGING SCHOLARS WORKSHOP APPLICATION in the subject line:
